NESM is a vibrant museum and community hub with a drive toward delivering exceptional learning experiences through play and hands-on interaction.
As the only national museum dedicated to the long history of our vital emergency services we are proud to celebrate their amazing contribution to society through the UK’s largest historical collection of its kind. We utilise both modern and historical objects to engage, enthral and inspire learners of all ages as we look at the services themselves and their wider impact on society.
Through interactive simulators, climb-on vehicles, lights, sounds and smells learners can expect an entirely unique experience. Learners can engage with our collection of objects which include a 47ft Tyne Class lifeboat, 18th century firefighting beer tokens, the very first Barnsley horse-drawn ambulance, an armoured police vehicle and even 1920s forged money. And what better place to learn than in our atmospheric Victorian Police, Fire and Ambulance station?
As a self-funded museum and charity our team engages with over 50,000 individuals a year, bringing our learning offering like our Great Fire of London and Modern Fire Safety workshops to life all over the country. Our learning sessions come in all shapes and sizes and range from Crime and Punishment, WWII and the Blitz to People Who Help Us and Extreme Vehicles. Using our range of functional vehicles, our historic building and collection we support cross-curricular learning and promote STEM and creative skills. Paired with informal learning through our yearly programme of events and community engagement and our outreach programme using our fleet of functional vehicles, the possibilities with NESM are endless!
