Sheffield Museums Trust is the independent charity that operates six of the city’s leading museums and heritage sites and cares for Sheffield’s collections of art, human and industrial history and natural science. We look after Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Graves Gallery, Kelham Island Museum, Millennium Gallery, Shepherd Wheel Workshop and Weston Park Museum. We work with our communities to tell the remarkable stories of Sheffield and its people, and celebrate its reputation for excellence in art, craft, making and innovation.
It is our ambition that all Sheffield’s school-age children and young people feel ownership of and connection to their museum collections through inclusive, inspiring and engaging learning activities and resources. We welcome school visits from across the region as well as further afield. Our workshops and activities take place in our galleries and learning spaces. Our learning programme spans topics as diverse as climate change and Anglo-Saxon life, metalwork design and contemporary art, Sheffield industry and the Ancient Egyptians. As well as teaching practical creative skills, our sessions encourage children and young people to ask questions about, and find inspiration in, the world around them.
Our Public Programme for families and young people enables children and young people to engage with our collection and exhibitions in fun, interactive activities across our sites. We offer exciting sensory and messy play sessions for under 5’s throughout term time and creative hands-on activities for families during Sheffield school holidays. Our offer is inspired by our objects and current displays, allowing families and young children to better understand and connect creatively to our sites and collections. In addition, we work with young people to develop and deliver events, exhibitions and more as part of our Young Makers projects, which take place at least 3 times per year. Young Makers gives young people an opportunity to work directly with artists, curators and other facilitators, have an exclusive insight into specific parts of our collection and gain valuable skills and knowledge about creative careers.
