Grimm & Co
Grimm & Co is a Yorkshire literacy charity with a mission to change lives, one story at a time.
We provide exciting writing workshops to children and young people, from birth to age 18, unleashing imaginations through the joyful discovery of stories. These workshops are all free to the child, and encourage their self-esteem, resilience and self-belief, raising literacy levels and building confidence. We target young people from disadvantaged areas, both in our school workshops and out-of-school activities, making a hugely positive impact on their lives.
We aim to build the capacity of children and young people, helping them to discover and unleash their hidden talents, building confidence and self-esteem and recognising their individual skills and potential.
We believe in:
Using stories to give every child, from every background, a voice
Starting from the child’s own cultural toolkit (their experiences and their own imagination)
Enabling a creative environment – an ecology of rich literacies surrounding the child – authentic but playful
Supporting and enabling the influencers on the child – inspiring whole communities to get involved in children’s development
The power of the imagination to ignite new possibilities and imagine potential narratives
Providing purpose – a reason to write
Challenging expectations and aspirations
Taking fun seriously
Our family workshops for 0-6 year olds focus on sensory play, stories and language development. These sessions are planned by our qualified and experienced early years practitioner, alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. The activities are freely accessible and allow you to bond whilst interacting and nurturing your child's development.
The workshops for ages 7+ cover lots of different types of writing, from comedy writing and stories, to poems, plays and monologues. We welcome young people from across Yorkshire and beyond. We know that strong writing skills and an ability to imagine beyond what we experience are fundamental to future success. We also believe it is important for young people to see a real reason to write so there is always an outcome from the activities we do.
School classes visit the Emporium of Stories for Storymaking, Product Development and Comedy writing workshops, and these are suitable for Year 2s and above. We also undertake residencies and projects within schools across the region.
You can also just pay a visit to our Emporium of Stories, where you will see a magical apothecary, open since 1148 (just before lunchtime), and serving all sorts of magical beings (wizards, giants, fairies, trolls...). We sell everything that magical beings may need - giant belly button cleaners (for clearing out stray chickens), ready-blended potions for the busy witch/wizard (a wide range, including Grandma's Scabs, Middle-Aged Vitriol or A Pinch of Happiness), human disguises, invisibility, and much much more.
While you're here, enjoy delicious food and drink in our Feastery cafe, take a book from our Forgotten Library, and take part in delightful creative writing activities.
